Die Fachrichtung 5.6 Informationswissenschaft hat fuer den 2. und 3. Mai Herrn Prof. Dr. David Farkas fuer einen Vortrag zum Thema " Writing for the Web " und einen Workshop "Ten Principles of Web Design" gewinnen koennen. Prof. Farkas lehrt und forscht am Department of Technical Communication der University of Washington, Seattle, USA und ist ein bekannter Spezialist fr technische Dokumentation. Seine derzeitigen Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Hypertexttheory and Websitedesign. Writing for the Web

Reading on the Web is influenced by ergonomic factors, such as screen legibility, and by cultural factors, notably rapid access to unlimited cost-free information. Another important factor is the non-linearity of the Web as an information environment. Whereas many print genres encourage linear reading, Websites typically invite users to choose which branch of the Website hierarchy to descend and invite other kinds of non-linear traversal of the hierarchy.

These factors collectively exert pressure toward modular content and perhaps fragmentation of content, though extended non-linear discourse remains viable on the Web. When we want to present a topic in depth while permitting the non-linear access that is characteristic of the Web, new strategies are needed. These include gauging the degree of open-endedness users can tolerate and carefully placing pre-requisite information within the hierarchy.

Ten Principles of Web Design

In this workshop these ten fundamental principles for designing a quality Website will be explained and illustrated:
1. Define your purpose and your target audience.
2. Express the Website`s theme through content and style.
3. Use Web content types appropriately.
4. Provide orientation and continuity from page to page.
5. Understand hierarchical structure and the alternatives.
6. Organize your content into a usable hierarchy.
7. Reveal the site structure through the interface.
8. Organize your pages with emphasis, grouping, and subordination.
9. Make your links and their destinations clear.
10. Write for the Web medium.
